# External payment methods

Offer a payment method Kustom doesn't process as an external payment method in the checkout's payment list — what it hands to you, the fields it takes and the exact supported names.

An external payment method is a method Kustom doesn't process, shown in the checkout's payment
list next to the ones it does. Selecting it sends the customer to a page you host, along with
the rest of the purchase.

[PayPal](/checkout/paypal/) has a page of its own: Kustom presents it and manages the order,
and PayPal pays out and handles disputes.

## Adding an external payment method

An external payment method appears in the checkout's payment list. The customer enters
their address details in Kustom Checkout as usual, but selecting the method redirects them
to a URL you provide, and from there the purchase is entirely yours.

`countries` is the one worth knowing about: Kustom drops any method whose list doesn't
contain the customer's billing country — the purchase country until an address is entered — so a single payload can carry every external method
you offer and each customer sees only the ones that work where they are. Leave it out and
the method shows everywhere. `label` takes `continue` or `complete` and nothing else — any
other value fails the call with `BAD_VALUE`.

## What you take on when you go external

These warnings are the reason an external method is a deliberate choice rather than a
configuration flag.

- **Kustom creates no order and tracks nothing.** There's no order in Order Management to
  capture, refund or reconcile against.
- **No customer data crosses over.** Kustom shares nothing with the external provider. You
  or the provider must collect, secure and store whatever the purchase needs — address,
  name, contact details.
- **Every page after the redirect is yours.** Order summary, confirmation, receipts,
  reconciliation.
- **You need a backend integration with the provider.** Selecting the method in Kustom
  only redirects. Nothing is paid or authorized by that click.
- **Kustom's buyer protection doesn't apply.** Label these methods clearly as external so
  customers aren't misled about what protects the purchase.
- **A contractual agreement is required** with the external provider, for compliance
  reasons. Contact your account manager before enabling one.

## Supported external payment method names

Matching ignores case, but otherwise a name must be spelled exactly as listed, spaces and
punctuation included. A name that isn't on the list is not an error: the method is silently
left out of the checkout. The same goes for every external method until external payment
methods are enabled for your account.
